Apple swapped a processor from Intel for its own A4 system-on-a-chip in the slimmed-down AppleTV set top box it unveiled Wednesday. It’s a move that tells you everything you need to know about consumer technology industry right now.

We’re shifting to a post-PC era, one where consumer gadgets need to be cheap, easily customizable, power-efficient, and connected. Just compare and contrast the new AppleTV with the older model.

The Apple TV was a stripped down PC, complete with a 160 GB spinning hard drive and an Intel Pentium M processor. It cost on $229 and weighed just 2.4 pounds.

The new model, by contrast, is a bulked up smart phone. It’s just a quarter of the size of the old model. It relies on Internet streaming, rather than a hard-drive, for content, and it uses the same Apple A4 processor used in Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. the price? Just $99.

Like a smart phone, it doesn’t do everything a desktop PC can, but it does enough to be useful. little wonder Intel warned investors it will miss its sales targets this quarter because of — you guessed it — weaker than expected demand for desktop PC processors in developed markets.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company is already looking past desktop PCs for growth: it’s counting on processors for servers as well as notebooks and other mobile devices to deliver double-digit sales and earnings growth over the next few years.

Meanwhile sales of smart phones are booming. So are sales of Apple’s iPad. these devices are built around a processor design licensed from ARM. the stripped down design uses less power and typically costs less to manufacture than Intel’s processors.

Another plus: companies such as Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Apple, and Samsung can license the design then tailor it to suit their device’s hardware and software.

Look for ARM-based processors to shove their way up into more powerful consumer devices, such as Apple TV, as Intel pushes its processors into smaller and cheaper gadgets. Expect a clash between these two architectures in 2012, when Intel’s all-out blitz on the smart phone market will be well under way.

If Intel succeeds in conquering the market for smaller, cheaper, and more efficient processors it might even win back a spot in Apple’s next TV product. Intel’s Atom processor already has a spot in a new smart television that will be arriving, from Sony, this fall.

Self-sufficiency, neighborhood beautification, reconnecting with the earth, growing good food — there are as many reasons to start a community garden as there are types of vegetables.

In Monterey County, as in many other places, community gardening is on the upswing. Several community gardens have gotten a foothold in the past few years, and another is on the way, a boon to those who want to get their hands in the soil and grow their own tasty treats or beautiful flowers. (See sidebar for information on how to get involved in the area’s community gardens.)

In fact, there’s been so much demand for plots at the Chinatown Community Garden in Salinas that coordinator Iris Peppard said they’re now in the process of redesigning the garden so that there will be more spaces available.

“It’s a good problem to have,” said Peppard.

Community gardens are basically a shared space where a variety of people take responsibility for a bed or plot, and can plant and maintain their plot as they see fit. Some gardens charge a nominal fee and some don’t. Others ask for certain amount of volunteer hours or donations of seeds, tools or building materials.

there are some 5,000 community gardens throughout the United States, some of which are former “Victory Gardens” begun as a self-sufficiency measure during World War II. Many more have started since then, according to the American Community Garden Association, a national advocate for the community gardening movement.

There’s been a renewed interest in gardening of late, particularly of edible plants, as people look for ways to stretch their budgets during the economic downturn, while others seek the satisfaction of growing organic, absolutely fresh fruits and vegetables.

Local community gardens are as different from each other as the groups that run them, and their missions are many. at Chinatown Community Garden, part of the Salinas city renewal project in that area, the garden is one way to increase produce consumption and sense of community in a very low-income neighborhood; at Monterey Community Roots Garden, it’s the reclamation of a formerly unbeautiful lot and an exercise in sustainability.

at Community Garden of Salinas, established in 2009, the project solved two important problems: what to do with a vacant lot that belongs to St. George’s Episcopal Church, and giving apartment dwellers in North Salinas a chance to get back to the earth.

the church launched the Community Garden of Salinas after a neighborhood meeting last year, and 20 beds were installed this past spring, according to garden coordinator Susan Smith. Currently 16 of the beds are being used.

“The time seemed right last year with the economy going south,” said Smith, who said the 1.5-acre lot is next to the church. Putting it to use as a garden seemed to be a perfect solution in the midst of all the apartment buildings in the area, a way for residents to grow their own healthy food and enjoy the exercise and community benefits of working in a garden. there was also the hope that students from North Salinas High School, which is close by, would get involved.

In Monterey, the Roots Garden got going late last year as a better use of a Monterey city lot that had been a junk heap for many years. the space on Van Buren Street is now well on its way to being a small but attractive meditation and native plant garden, with a few raised beds devoted to vegetables, and fruit trees lining the fences.

“We basically want to make it as sustainable as possible,” said Megan Tolbert, one of the driving forces behind the garden, something she’s been working on with the city since 2008.

Volunteers cleaned up the trash, installed walking paths and planted everything from drought-resistant shrubs to avocado and apricot trees; currently they’re trying to improve deer fencing, since the edibles are now attracting wildlife.

the garden is also devoted to reuse and recycling, with much of the material and tools coming from free sources like Craigslist and Freecycle. Some 40 volunteers give their time to the Roots Garden, with about 10 coming on a regular basis

just down the street at Monterey Institute of International Studies is another community garden for the use of MIIS students and staff, with a wealth of late-summer vegetables on the vine as well as nodding sunflowers and darting dragonflies. Participants host parties and potlucks here at the picnic tables in the garden, according to volunteer Tim Wilson, who also helps out at the Roots Garden.

Salinas’ Chinatown Community Garden got its start as a job-training program for the homeless through the Service Learning Institute of CSU Monterey Bay, according to coordinator Peppard. That program is over, and now the garden has 40 community gardeners who sign six-month contracts to “adopt” a bed or other space. In addition to the beds, there are also half wine barrels that can be used to grow plants.

Among the gardeners there are students, the homeless, elders from the local Buddhist temple, and others from the neighborhood.

“Chinatown has a lot of complicated problems … the garden is a neutral space where people can get to know each other,” Peppard notes. “We thought it would take a long time to get the beds adopted out, but by this spring, they were all gone.”

the garden is being funded through U.S. Department of Agriculture grants, and plans now call for building a gazebo with solar panels, as well as places where people can learn about native plants and the history of the Chinatown area.

all of this garden-building has inspired yet another one to germinate. In Seaside, the group Volunteers Improving Parks (VIP) is now working hard to get a community garden going, and they recently cleared a lot at Lowell and Broadway, according to Kay Cline of Sustainable Seaside.

Three neighbors have agreed to supply water, and donations of planting supplies, building materials and garden expertise are now being sought.

there are a cornucopia of benefits from community gardens, both for individuals and the neighborhood, said Peppard.

“It’s a way to meet people, with the joy of working with soil and nature, and enjoying the bounty of what nature can provide,” she said.

Title Tag optimization

In the title, include 1 or 2 of the most important keyword phrases. Do not list a bunch of keywords. Search engines view this type of heading as spam and you will be penalized if not blacklisted.

The title tag should be a readable sentence that makes sense.

Make sure your title is attracting to people, not just search engines.

Even if you make it to the top, you want a heading that is interesting to people. you need people to click on your title, otherwise, all that work was for nothing.

Try and place the keywords that the beginning of a title. sometimes search engines cut it off if it is too long. Keeping them at the front will ensure that even if the title is cut off, your keywords will still be seen.

Title tags need to be different for each webpage that you have. Make sure that your title is relevant to the information that is on that page.

The Meta description tag

Some search engines display the meta description in the search results instead of what is on the page, so make sure you word it correctly. put the targeted keywords in the description. Do not put more than 10 – 15 words in the description tag. Also, do not overload it with keywords.

As with the title, put the keywords in the front of the description if possible.

Meta keywords are optional (there is much debate over this issue).

Only include 5 – 7 words and only include the keywords that are in the body text. Add different spellings and synonyms of those keywords.

Pakistan is facing an enormous humanitarian crisis in the aftermath of the country’s worst flooding in its history—indeed, a crisis in terms of victims that is now larger than the last three devastating natural disasters combined (the Asian Tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir and 2010 Haiti earthquakes).  according to news sources, one fifth of the country has been affected by the disaster; that is, 20 million people, almost equalling Australia’s entire population.  given the speed that is necessary to cope with the huge number of people without safe drinking water, food, and shelter, I can’t help but think of the role mobile money could play in helping to accomplish the task that aid agencies face.

While mobile platforms have been used by aid agencies to distribute electronic vouchers redeemable for cash or food, such as the UN World Food Programme’s (WFP) pilot project for Iraqi refugees in Syria, mobile money is still relatively new in this field.  Aid agencies are, however, coming to realize the cost effectiveness, speed, and resilience that mobile money payments can provide in emergency situations.

One such agency is Concern Worldwide. in response to the Kenyan post-election violence in 2008, Concern and its local partner the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret implemented a cash transfer pilot in the Kerio Valley (KVCTP). This programme sought to alleviate the food security problems that affected communities faced after the violence by piloting the use of Safaricom’s M-Pesa to distribute payments of affected households. Once beneficiaries (the matriarch of each household) received this electronic value, they could redeem it for cash with any M-Pesa agent and use it to buy the food they needed.

An evaluation of the KVCTP found that, subject to a few conditions, using mobile payments is preferential to food distribution when providing post-crisis support. the pilot highlighted that using the M-pesa system was faster (i.e. overcoming logistical challenges), safer, cheaper, and offered immediate relief to a wider reach of beneficiaries. an added advantage was that beneficiaries stimulated the local food market.  The evaluation also found that the mobile phones distributed as part of the project helped to empower members of the community.  Following this pilot, Concern is implementing a similar emergency cash transfer programme in Niger in partnership with ZAIN’s mobile money platform, ZAP.

Given the size of Pakistan’s displaced population, her damaged infrastructure, the tenuous security situation, and perceived levels of corruption within the government, it is worth assessing the potential of monetary aid via mobile money.

A mobile money platform already exists in Pakistan—Telenor’s easypaisa, which offers the functionality to send money from one side of the country to another.  Could aid agencies distribute monetary aid via easypaisa?  When we caught up recently with the Telenor Pakistan team, they told us that the answer is yes, but noted a few key challenges:

- KYC requirements: a number of displaced families have lost all their belongings, including identification, so how do you make sure payments are getting to the right people?

- Distribution footprint: what happens when there is no local agent to serve affected communities?

- Liquidity: Unless retailers are willing to accept electronic value for payment of goods, customers will want to cash-out their payments, so how do you supply agents in affected areas with cash?

Will mobile money play a role in the relief and rebuilding efforts in Pakistan? For the Pakistani displaced communities, I hope so.

1. “You may have more investing experience than I do.”

The first step when selecting a money manager is reviewing his or her track record, which provides information about past performance and returns as well as investment style. A manager without a track record should raise a red flag, especially for an investor who’s looking to place money in experienced hands.

“if they don’t have a track record, there’s no real compelling reason to take a risk,” says Gary Schatsky, an attorney and fee-only financial advisor in New York.

Often, investors are concerned about ending up with a young money manager, but age shouldn’t be the focus of their search because it does not always speak to experience, he says. instead, investors should look at how long the people they’re considering have worked as money managers and check how their performance compares to investing benchmarks like bond funds or the S&P 500.

Currently, 546 out of the 2,729 domestic equity funds have managers with an average tenure of two years or less, according to Morningstar. and more than half (280) performed worse than the S&P 500’s 12-month return ending July 31 of 13.84%.

2. “I’ll beat the market—someday.”

It’s not easy to find a money manager who consistently beats the market. That’s not so bad when the market is up and your fund is up a little less; it’s worse when the market is down and you’re down more.

Lagging returns have been a common problem since the recession that began in December 2007.

“when virtually all indices are dropping the best you can hope for are comparatively better returns, which in many cases are negative just with a lower rate,” in the same asset class, says Schatsky. “but it takes a rare client to embrace that and recognize comparative value.”

Investors who are shopping for a money manager should focus on their past performance not just over the one-, three- or 10-year periods but specifically during bear markets to have a better understanding of how they adjust their investing tactics and how they react to market losses. Compare their performance to similar funds and, if applicable, to the index itself, says Schtasky. “You want to see that they have performed well to the benchmark,” he says.

3. “Hedge funds aren’t what they used to be.”

Once reserved for the super-rich, hedge funds today are quite common and accessible to the average investor. Assets in hedge funds climbed 10% during the second half of 2009 to finish the year at $1.82 trillion, according to HedgeFund Intelligence. However, they haven’t been immune to the market downturn. That bump followed an 18-month period during which the hedge fund industry contracted by more than 30% and fell off its 2007 peak of $2.7 trillion in assets.

The funds’ recent, relatively poor performance has caused some high-profile hedge fund managers to close up shop. In August, fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller, whose firm Duquesne Capital Management holds about $12 billion in assets under management and has averaged gains of about 30% over the past two decades, announced he would be closing the fund, citing disappointing returns.

Most hedge funds charge a management fee of around 2% of assets, and they charge a performance fee, which is often around 20% of portfolio gains. The performance fee doesn’t necessarily kick in right away; typically, the contract an investor signs with a hedge fund states that the fund must meet a certain level of performance first.

Hurricane Danielle

Hurricane Danielle is accelerating as it moves to the northeast, but has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm.

At 6 a.m. EDT, the center of Hurricane Danielle was located near latitude 33.2 north, longitude 57.3 west, east of Bermuda.

Danielle is moving northeast near 21 mph, but is expected to slow over the next 36 hours. 

On the forecast track, the center of Danielle passed well east of Bermuda Saturday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph, with higher gusts. Some weakening is forecast over the next two days.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 972 mb, or 28.70 inches.

Large waves and dangerous surf conditions are expected in Bermuda during the next few days. Swells from Danielle began to arrive on the East Coast of the United States on Saturday, causing dangerous rip currents.

Lifeguards spent much of Saturday battling the effects of the rip currents, as dozens of swimmers had to be rescued off the east coast of Florida.

There are no warnings or watches in effect for Danielle.  A tropical storm watch for Bermuda was discontinued at 5 p.m.

Hurricane Earl

Hurricane Earl is now a Category 1 storm, as of Sunday morning.

Most forecast models show Earl missing Florida, Bay News 9 meteorologist Josh Linker said.  However, he said the Mid-Atlantic states should keep an eye on Earl.

At 11 a.m., the center of Tropical Storm Earl was located near latitude 16.9 north, longitude 56.9 west, 365 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands.

Earl is moving west at 18 mph. This general motion is expected to continue through Sunday, with a gradual turn toward the west-northwest coming sometime between Sunday night and Monday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 75 mph, with higher gusts. 

Estimated minimum central pressure is 989 mb, or 29.21 inches.

Several island nations in the Caribbean are under hurricane warnings, including Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla. 

In addition, a hurricane watch has been issued for Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the islands of Culebra and Vieques and the Netherlands Antilles.

A hurricane warning means hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours, while a hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.

Tropical Storm Fiona?

A tropical wave is behind Earl, and it could become Tropical Storm Fiona over the next two days.  it is located about 500 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and is moving to the west-northwest at about 20 mph.
